Summer Markets: Part 2 - In Crochet

Hair is a funny thing.  If someone is being nice about mine, they would say, "It's got nice body."  In reality it tends to shift between frizzy and limp depending on the weather and it's own whim.  In the summer, when heat and wind are factors I generally do what I can to hold it down.   This involves clips, ties, hats, scarves.  Really, what ever I think will work on the day.

For much of my life I wore a lot of bandannas.  There where bright ones to match the weather, or make sure that I was noticeable.  There were dark ones that wouldn't show stains or sweat as easily.  Somehow, in the last move, all but one was lost.  Since many of them had a bit of sentimental value to me, I never got around to replacing them.

For this months project I decided to make a piece that I could wear in their stead.  Something light and bright for the farmer's market, but also with some ventilation for the festivals.  Maybe also a bit versatile, just in case I wanted to lace it around my hair or wear it in a different way.

How ever you would like to wear it, here is my pattern for a Summer Half-Kerchief.

Summer Half-Kerchief

Materials:

·         1 Spool Aunt Lydias Crochet Thread: Classic 10, Color – Ocean, 995

·         Size 8, 1.50 mm Crochet Hook

·         Small Darning Needle

Gauge:

·         45.5 Stitches x 48 Rows = 4” x 4” in Single Crochet

Finished Size:

·         Tie: 29” Wide x 1/2” Deep

·         Kerchief: 21.25” narrowing to 13.25” Wide x 12” Deep

Notes:

·         Instructions are in American crochet terms

·         Stitch counts are written in (blue italics).

·         The tie and kerchief take one entire spool of thread.  A second spool will be needed for anything added.

·         Charts are given for all of the motifs.

·         Only rows 1 through 18 are written out in long-form.  A complete copy of the instructions in long form is available upon request.
