A Stocking In Time For the Holidays

It's not usually my habit to start talking about the dreaded gift giving major holiday until at least after Thanksgiving.  Knowing that a bit of fore-thought is needed when crafting for the holidays, this year I decided to make an exception.  So I bring you a cabled stocking pattern for you or your friends to have on hand for Santa.  (It's always reassuring to find out if you've been naughty of nice.)

In my family's traditions, one is not allowed to go out and get their own Christmas Stocking.  It has to be given to you and is preferably hand made.  This is a tradition that I wanted to continue for my Bug-A-Boo.

When I was born my mother made me a beautiful hand knit stocking.  (I still use it to this day.)  She followed the pattern precisely, but misread the needle instructions and instead of using size 8, 10" needles she used size 10 needles.  This gave my stocking a lot of stretch.  Santa can fit quite a bit in there without breaking a sweat.  When my brother was born, my mother knit him a stocking as well.  Again she used the size 10 needles and just changed the cabling.  When my brother and I were older we wondered why our parents missed out on the stocking fun, and so my mom pulled out the needles again and knit another stocking for my father with different cables again.

My mother got a stocking that we found at the local farmer/craft market.  It was hand-made, but didn't have the internal capabilities that all of ours had.  For a few years I asked my mother for her original pattern, but it seems that it fell into the ether of old projects.  Then one year on Ravelry I found what looked very much like the original pattern.  So I knit my mother a stocking using the over-sized needles, but this time taking out most of the seams by knitting a much as I could in the round.  Now my mother has a stocking that can be packed to the gills with all sorts of goodies.

Last year after my daughter was born I decided some time in November to knit her a stocking as well.   We went down to the yarn store and I pulled out different colors to see what she seemed to be attracted to.  Bright red won the day.   I charted out some different cables and set to work.  At the time she was only a few months old, and I wasn't getting enough sleep to be able to cook half the time, let alone knit an old pattern that I was reworking.  First I attempted to knit it in the round.  Somehow I couldn't keep track of the stitch count, so that got torn out.  Then I attempted to knit it flat like the instructions.  That time I could not turn the heal.  No matter what I tried I could not understand the instructions, so after a couple of weeks of mistakes this attempt got pulled out as well.  By this time there was no way the stocking was going to be done in time.  Luckily Bug-A-Boo has some very talented Aunties and one of them knit her a lovely stocking.

I still wanted to knit her a stocking though.  So this summer I pulled out the pattern, my charts, and a bunch of reference books and decided to completely redesign this stocking's build.  Bug-A-Boo's stocking is knit from the toe up, in the round, and the only piece that is made separately is the hanging loop.  It has it's own cables that reach down towards the toe and self-terminate.

After all of the time that went into this Christmas tradition, I figured that I should share it with others.  I hope that you enjoy it.

If you would like a pdf of this pattern and have a Ravelry account, a copy can be found here.

If you would like a copy from Etsy, it can be found here.

Feel free to change the yarn, gauge, or size to fit your needs.  Just please do not try to sell this pattern as your own.

If you have any problems that you think that I might be able to help you with, email me at GridMammalCrafts@gmail.com .

Notes:
·         This pattern is written to be knit in the round from the toe up.
·         This stocking is done on needles that are a bit large for the size of the yarn.  This means that there will be a lot of stretch when it’s done to hold bigger gifts, but it is also easy knit in and uneven gauge if not careful.
·         The toe chart should be done four times for each round.
·         Stitches outlined in red denote stitch sequences that are repeated in certain situations.  Check the written instructions for the correct count.
·         Slipped stitches are slipped purl-wise.
·         It is not advisable to hang the stocking while it is filled.
·         Stocking can also be worn as a hat.

Repeat round 67 until the cuff is approximately 4” long (about 20 times), or until it is the length desired.
Bind off loosely and weave in ends.

·         On the inside, follow the center back of the stocking up to the top of the leg to the point where the cuff starts.
·         Find three back loops in a line.

·         With the size J crochet hook, slip stitch through the back loop to the left.  Leave at least a six inch tail to be sewn in later.
·         Chain 12.
·         Slip stitch through the back loop of the right stitch, then the center stitch.
·         Slip stitch through the initial join.
·         Single crochet 20 times around the chain 12.
·         Cut yarn leaving at least a six inch tail and pull it through.

·         Sew in the tails.  Be sure to anchor the loop well by sewing in the ends well.
