Knit a Fibbish Shawl and Remember Autumn

A couple of months ago I got a wild hair and decided to start looking at Fibonacci sequences in nature.  I remembered to basic idea from back in grade school and though it might be fun to see it in the world.

While diving down that rabbit hole I found a picture of some sort of succulent plant.  After looking at it, the thought that cam into my head was, "That could make a fun shawl design."

Luckily I had a few skeins of lace weight yarn in my stash, so off I went.

This is my first time attempting to make a shawl pattern, and so far I'm pretty happy with the finished project.  It's going to make a nice gift down the road.

If you would like a PDF of these patterns and have a Ravelry account, a copy can be found here.

Feel free to change the yarn, gauge, or size to fit your needs.  Just please do not try to sell this pattern as your own.

If you have any problems that you think I might be able to help you with, email me at GridMammalCrafts@gmail.com

Fibbish Shawl

·         32” US Size 9 (5.5 mm) Circular Knitting Needles

·         Short Straight US Size 9 (5.5 mm) Knitting Needles  (Optional)

·         2  or more Stitch Markers (Optional)

·         Small Darning Needle

Gauge:

·         14 Stitches x 20 Rows = 4” x 4” in Blocked Stockinette

Finished Size:

·         At the widest points, Approx. 80” wide x 42” Tall

Notes:

·         Charted stitches outlined in red and green denote stitch sequences that are repeated in certain situations.  Check the written instructions for the correct count.

·         Stitch counts are written in (in blue italics).

·         All slipped stitches should be slipped purl-wise with the yarn held toward the knitter.

·         Charts only represent right side rows.  All wrong side rows should be knit as follows: slip 1, purl to end of row

·         The border is knit at a 90 degree angle to the edge of the shawl back and forth, connecting to the shawl using Knit-2-Together Through The Back Loop.  So, the body of the shawl is knit first, and then the border is knit onto and around the shawl.

·         The border starts each new edge of the shawl by casting on 6 stitches.

Instructions:

Cast on 29 stitches.

Border

Chart 7: Border Repeats.  Rows 1 through 8 should be repeated along each edge until the end of that edge is reached.  The final row on an edge should be an even row, but may not be Row 8.

With your 491 stitches still on your needles and on the wrong side, Cast On 6 stitches.

Turn work.

The border will be knit perpendicular to the body of the shawl with the k2tog tbl joining to the next stitch along the edge.

Row 1 (rs): k1, yo, k4, k2tog tbl

Row 2 (ws): s, p6

Row 3 (rs): ssk, yo, ssk, k2, k2tog tbl

Row 4 (ws): s, p5

Row 5 (rs): ssk, yo, cdd, yo, k2tog tbl

Row 6 (ws): s, p4

Row 7 (rs): k1, yo, k3, k2tog tbl

Row 8 (ws): s, p5

Repeat rows 1 through 8 until you have worked along all the stitches on the bottom edge of the shawl.  End after a wrong side row is completed.

Next Side Addition (ws): With the border stitches still on your needles and still on the wrong side, cast on 6 more stitches.

·         Repeat rows 1 through 8 until you have worked along the border stitches from the previous border edge.

·         Continue repeating rows 1 through 8 and pick-up the next edge stitch and knit that together with the last border stitch on your needles for the last k2tog tbl at the end of every odd row.

·         Continue on this way until the border has been knit onto the entire side, ending with a wrong side row is completed.

Repeat the Next Side addition to complete the border along the cast-on edge and the next slipped stitch edge

On the final edge, also work along the initial cast-on edge from the bottom border before completing the side border.

When the border has been knit all around the shawl, bind off purl-wise on the last wrong side row, remembering to slip the first stitch.

Break yarn and weave in ends.

Block and enjoy.
