Ah! It's the Holidays! - Knit the Youngster Cabled Shrug

It's the holiday season again!  I don't know whether to worry that our culture can just say the holiday season and anyone can reasonable name off at least two of the correct choices.  On the up side, the fact that there are many more than two correct choices is nice.  On the down side, trying to keep track of everyone's' idiosyncrasies this time of year is just tiring.

You'd think that having started making snowflakes in September, the month wouldn't have snuck up me, but no such luck.  Every year I hit this point of working out how fast I can complete presents and deciding if it might be more cost effective to just buy one more.  Oh well, by this point there's some semblance of a method to my madness.

So, off onto a completely different tangent.  When I was looking at knitting patterns, there appeared to be a couple of age points that were a bit sparce.  One was the approximately 3 - 4 year old range, and the second was the tween - early teen ages.  To be fare, all sizing is a bit personal, but I was still having trouble finding a good outer layer for Bug-A-Boo.  Something that wasn't too long, and was bigger that toddler, but smaller than child.

What do I do when things like this happen.  Well, I make something up.  Bug-A-Boo didn't want a sweater, and doesn't like long sleeves.  I decided a shrug might be best.  They are fairly simple in construction and I could make the sleeves short enough so that they wouldn't get mixed in with whatever Bug-A-Boo was currently exploring.

Following is the pattern for the Youngster Cabled Shrug.

If you would like a PDF of this pattern and have a Ravelry account, a copy can be found here.

Switch back to Color A
Repeat row 25 – 48 of Chart 1.
Repeat all rows of Chart 1 once more.

Fold the piece that you’ve just knitted in half so that the edge on the needle lines up with the cast on edge.  Pick up the 50 stitches on one side of the cast on edge with the second set of Size 8 needles, removing the waste yarn for those stitches.  With the piece still folded in half, sew the 50 cast on stitches on one side to the 50 stiches mirroring it from the last worked row using the Kitchener Stich and Color A

Repeat the process with the 50 stitches on either side of the other side of the cast on edge and its mirroring final worked row.

(This leaves 56 stitches remaining in the center of the cast on edge on the waste yarn, and 56 stitches on the 32” Size 8 circular needle.)

Waist

Pick up the remaining 56 stitches from the cast on edge with the size 7 circular needles, removing the waste yarn.  On the same needle transfer the remaining 56 stitches from the last row to the size 7 needle.  Place a stitch marker to show the beginning of the round.

Chart 5: Beginning of Waist Chart.  Color B.
Using Color B and with the right side facing.
Round 1: ((k1, p1) x 3) x 8, pick up 2 stitches before working the next stitch, ((k1, p1) x 3) x 8, pick up 2 stitches before finishing the round. (60 stitches)
Continue working (k1, p1) x 66 on each round until the waist section measures ~ 5”.
Work another inch with (k2, p2) x 33 around.
Bind off stitches.
Leave a tail and break yarn.

Neck

Choose which side of the top you would like to be your front.

Using the Size 8 circular needles and Color B, with the front right side facing you, pick up 48 stitches along the edge, pick 2 stitches where the front and back meet, pick up 48 more stitches along the next edge, and 2 more stitches where the front and the back meet.  Place marker to show the beginning of the round.  (100 stitches)

Bind off stitches in pattern

Sew in ends.

(Suggestion: Use a bit of spare yarn in Color B to reinforce the point where the neckline switched from being knit in the round, to knit back and forth, by weaving with the stitches along that spot.)

With Color A, reinforce the three button holes using a buttonhole stitch.

Sew buttons onto the collar.

Enjoy.
